Today's lecture was conducted by Dr. Siti and we learned about Instructional Design. This is a new concept for me, as I have never encountered this term before in my path of becoming a teacher. An instructional design brings the meaning of central activity of teaching to help others through their instruction. This gives us the meaning of instructional designer, who is someone who carefully and thoughtfully created learning experiences. In other words, teachers are theoretically instructional designers as they create a learning experiences for their students through thought-out methods.
An easy way to apply instructional design in teaching method would be to follow the Model ID (ASSURE). 'A' stands for analyze learners as this is very important because we need to know our students' sociogeographic and access to technology. 'S' stands for state objectives. Objectives are very important in making it clear to us in what way do we want to conduct the class. 'S' also stands for select media. After getting to know our students better and be sure of our objectives, we should pick a media that is suitable to be used as teaching method in the classroom. Meanwhile 'U' stands for utilise materials. This aspect is very important because the materials that are needed should be enough for the learning process to be able to be held. Moving on to 'R', which stands for Require performance. This is the stage where we conduct our learning process for the students based on the previous letters. Last but not least, 'E', which stands for Evaluate and revise. After the learning process has been conducted, it is crucial for teachers to reflect and evaluate of what could be made better. In my opinion, I think the lesson that was taught today was crucial for me to understand the concept as it could help me to better understand my students, thus bringing the best methods to help clear their path of getting their cups of knowledge fulfilled.

As a future teacher, I have come to the realization that I can never get rid of the concept of learning theories, as it has been following me since semester 1 of my freshman year. Today's lecture was conducted by Dr. Yusoff Daud. Throughly digesting the concept of learning theories is very important for me as a future educator as it helps me to identify my students' learning styles in which can help them learn better.
The first learning theory that is most familiar with most generations, is the Behaviorism. Behaviorism is a view in which behavior can be explained by external factors. In this theory, the ideas of positive and negative reinforcement help in peaking students' interest in learning as they can see the effects of their behavior hands on. The next one is Cognitivism, a theory developed by Jean Piaget in which a child develops cognitive pathways in understanding and physical response to experiences. This theory refers to the brain as the blackbox that has the ability to process and store information just like a computer. This theory believes that students learn more effectively through reading text and lecture instruction. I think this theory works the best with introverted students. The third one is Constructivism, a theory that focuses on learners using their previous experiences as a map for new informations to be digested into their minds when learning. In simpler words, people use what they already know to construct new meanings for informations that they are about to learn Last but not least is Connectivism, which is a relatively new learning theory, developed and based upon the idea that people process information by forming connections. This theory is the one that is most spot on when used with Gen-Z students as this generation of students depend on their knowledge of networking to make sense of the informations that they are learning about. Being a teacher means you will have the experience to meet every layer of the types of humans that roam on this earth. I will have to make myself ready to face the variety of students that will come to my path on their journey to quench their thirsts for knowledge. Innovation and Technology for Education has taught me to be creative in finding ways to make learning process a fun journey for my students. As we had no class for this week as well, here is some of my thoughts and prayers on becoming a teacher.
May I see my students through a lens that sees the flowers spurting in their minds, not just by what they can or cannot do. Understanding them better through this course is important for me, but I hope the bridge between understanding and applying could be smoother for me. May I be a teacher who does not discriminate because she is simply ‘tired’ to see the flowers that grow in the frames of her students’ minds. May this world be a joyful experience for my students, one that they can collect the petals of the flowers that have fallen, and write upon them their thoughts for their thoughts are the poetry for the upcoming generation. May I be a teacher who does not forget that it is humane to err, and to err is no excuse for me to not be humane. This week's lecture was cancelled for some reasons and I think it would be nice if I were to post a reflection that I wrote last semester about what I had learned in my psychology class.
"Today we learned about the humanistic learning theories. According to the slides, humanism emphasized human experience more than anything else. I think it is crucial for me to understand this better so that I can give my students a humanistic learning experience that is joyful. Humanism is a philosophy that focuses on individual and living qualities contributing to human prosperity. To each his own way of learning because every human being is unique. The way the learning process is conducted in classrooms nowadays is by seeing students not using a humanistic lens, but instead, seeing them as a product. If they get successful marks, then they will succeed. This is the common conception towards students. We train them as robots to achieve our own goals without thinking that they also have their own goals to accomplish. Therefore, it is important for me to understand the concept of humanism better through the ideas of Maslow and Rogers. According to Maslow, man’s need can be divided into two; basic need and growth need. Basic need is basically food, safety, love and self-esteem, whilst growth need compromises understanding, aesthetic values and self-actualisation. Self-actualisation is when one achieves his full capacity and dreams. Roger has his own ideas regarding humanism as he aimed to help people achieve health and wellbeing by providing a positive psychological climate. This involves active listening to attend purposefully to the meaning and intention of what another person is saying. He also proposed the concept of non-directive teaching which occurs when teacher acts as the facilitator who guides students and nurtures learning. The concept of humanism helps teachers to have a right aim which to enhance learner’ personal and emotional development within a caring and supportive learning environment. Strong advocates of humanist education believes that their aims cannot always be achieved in mainstream educational contexts. This further highlights the fact that we should give a significance value to our students’ personal and emotional development, instead of only focusing on their intellectual development." Here is a short message for Teacher Syasya: May you never stop being creative in finding the flowers that bloom in your students' minds. |
