As a future teacher, I have come to the realization that I can never get rid of the concept of learning theories, as it has been following me since semester 1 of my freshman year. Today's lecture was conducted by Dr. Yusoff Daud. Throughly digesting the concept of learning theories is very important for me as a future educator as it helps me to identify my students' learning styles in which can help them learn better.
The first learning theory that is most familiar with most generations, is the Behaviorism. Behaviorism is a view in which behavior can be explained by external factors. In this theory, the ideas of positive and negative reinforcement help in peaking students' interest in learning as they can see the effects of their behavior hands on. The next one is Cognitivism, a theory developed by Jean Piaget in which a child develops cognitive pathways in understanding and physical response to experiences. This theory refers to the brain as the blackbox that has the ability to process and store information just like a computer. This theory believes that students learn more effectively through reading text and lecture instruction. I think this theory works the best with introverted students. The third one is Constructivism, a theory that focuses on learners using their previous experiences as a map for new informations to be digested into their minds when learning. In simpler words, people use what they already know to construct new meanings for informations that they are about to learn Last but not least is Connectivism, which is a relatively new learning theory, developed and based upon the idea that people process information by forming connections. This theory is the one that is most spot on when used with Gen-Z students as this generation of students depend on their knowledge of networking to make sense of the informations that they are learning about.
