This week's lecture was cancelled for some reasons and I think it would be nice if I were to post a reflection that I wrote last semester about what I had learned in my psychology class.
"Today we learned about the humanistic learning theories. According to the slides, humanism emphasized human experience more than anything else. I think it is crucial for me to understand this better so that I can give my students a humanistic learning experience that is joyful. Humanism is a philosophy that focuses on individual and living qualities contributing to human prosperity. To each his own way of learning because every human being is unique. The way the learning process is conducted in classrooms nowadays is by seeing students not using a humanistic lens, but instead, seeing them as a product. If they get successful marks, then they will succeed. This is the common conception towards students. We train them as robots to achieve our own goals without thinking that they also have their own goals to accomplish. Therefore, it is important for me to understand the concept of humanism better through the ideas of Maslow and Rogers. According to Maslow, man’s need can be divided into two; basic need and growth need. Basic need is basically food, safety, love and self-esteem, whilst growth need compromises understanding, aesthetic values and self-actualisation. Self-actualisation is when one achieves his full capacity and dreams. Roger has his own ideas regarding humanism as he aimed to help people achieve health and wellbeing by providing a positive psychological climate. This involves active listening to attend purposefully to the meaning and intention of what another person is saying. He also proposed the concept of non-directive teaching which occurs when teacher acts as the facilitator who guides students and nurtures learning. The concept of humanism helps teachers to have a right aim which to enhance learner’ personal and emotional development within a caring and supportive learning environment. Strong advocates of humanist education believes that their aims cannot always be achieved in mainstream educational contexts. This further highlights the fact that we should give a significance value to our students’ personal and emotional development, instead of only focusing on their intellectual development." Here is a short message for Teacher Syasya: May you never stop being creative in finding the flowers that bloom in your students' minds.
